Free hotel nights this fall through Expedia sale

Puerto Vallarta's Malecón

If you’re shopping for a hotel stay domestically or abroad, take a few minutes to peruse Expedia’s new sale before booking. Its “Fall Free Nights Sale,” though a little unwieldy at times to navigate online, is generating some good deals on numerous properties.

Deal: With this Expedia.com sale, you can reel in your last night for free at more than 1,700 venues internationally on certain multiple-night stays. Though the promotion states discount availability for stays of three, four and five nights, I found one “second night free” offer (directly below) in Mexico. Yet, for some other properties, the deals didn’t turn out to be as good as I’d expected.

Still, it’s a worthwhile exercise to compare current Expedia sale rates with what you’d pay directly with the hotel or elsewhere. I certainly found savings; see below.

* Puerto Vallarta, Mexico: At the 208-unit Playa Del Sol Costa Sur resort, you get every second night free under this deal. For two nights later this month, I found a rate — with the free night figured in — of just $132 total for a two-night stay. This is far below what you’d get if you booked through the resort’s own website: For the same two dates and the same room type (a “studio”), the total came to $264.

* Seattle: The Sorrento Hotel in Seattle offers a third night free under this deal. For a long weekend in early October, for a three-night stay, I got a total of $455 through Expedia.com. Booking through the hotel for the same dates and same room type, I’d pay $679.

* Los Angeles: This is one where savings, though still present, were not significant, due to a promotion being run by the hotel itself. At downtown L.A.’s Standard, the Expedia sale price for three nights totaled $486. It turns out that the hotel has its own “30% off” promo going now, so booked directly through the hotel, I’d pay $17 more (or $503 total).

When: Book by Oct. 15 for stays between now and Nov. 20, 2009.
