For Orange County residents and visitors, access to our country’s third-busiest airport has just gotten a little easier. This week, a new nonstop FlyAway bus service began carrying passengers between Los Angeles International Airport and the Irvine Metrolink Station.
The new service on a 22-seat bus running on compressed natural gas is available to travelers six times daily in each direction. The earliest and latest departures from Irvine are 4:45 a.m. and 4:45 p.m, and, upon arrival at the airport, passengers are dropped off at their terminals on the departure level.
Buses headed to Irvine depart from the arrivals level of LAX between the hours of 9:45 a.m. and 9:45 p.m. See the LAWA website for the schedule.
The one-way fare for the 50-mile journey costs $25 per adult, and up to two students with student ID (from kindergarten through 8th grade) can ride free per paying adult. Children younger than 5 ride free. Riders must pay upon boarding the bus with a credit or debit card.
FlyAway buses also travel to LAX from Los Angeles’ Union Station, Van Nuys and Westwood.

22 * 6 *2 = 264. This is “public” transport?

$25 is too high, way too high. It neither encourages single flyer nor a family of 2 or 4 or 6. offairport parking is much cheaper. The only people who will find this comfortable is business travellers. May be they are the people this is targeted. And the problem with this model is when business tanks down, this system will be running under losses. I think it should target much wider population.

This information is going to make my last minute Thanksgiving trip so much easier. This is a great idea and I’ll have to give it a try!

what kind of kindergartener has a school ID?
Why not just say “each adult may be accompanied by two children up to age 14″

$25 is a bargain! In the late 80s-early 1990s, it cost $39 one-way from the Long Beach Marriott to LAX. This will make alot of OC international travelers happy.

This is a great idea for the single traveller or couple. The choice is yours whether to take the bus or not. For those complaining about this, just go somewhere else. There always going to be compaints and negatives. Again, the choice is yours.

Do you offer public parking in Irvine?
November 19th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Two years ago the FlyAway bus fare between LAX and Union Station was $3. Today it is $7. Even if the new Irvine service finds any riders, don’t expect the $25 one-way fare to last as it’s most certainly just a promotional come on.

LAWA has leased the parking lot that was used for Metrolink overflow (before the multi level lot was built). You can park there for FREE if you are using the Flyaway bus. As I understand it parking is allowed for up to 30 days.
Too expensive? You serious? This is a NONSTOP service. Super Shuttle is $45 from John Wayne Airport to LAX - plus you make a ton of stops.
It isn’t OCTA/MTA by any stretch but it does help offset a need that hasn’t been addressed before. Reliable scheduled service from LAX to South Orange County (with a 2 min walk to connecting Metrolink Service).
LAWA does try to break even on this; even if they don’t they do have funding (from their PFC’s - NOT TAX revenue) to help with lowering the driver footprint to and from LAX.
Some people need some perspective… For the single biz traveller - this is HUGE. I can use Orange County Airport on an outbound (I get dropped off) and return back into LAX then use FlyAway.
How can this be bad?

What a good idea! I was waiting for this a long time, but the last pick up from Irvine is 4:45pm! Too…early, is it possible give us 2 more time schedule?? Make the one latest time at 9pm? Then some International traveler (some always have mid night flight) can get those bus ride too. Thanks

I tried this LAX/Irvine service and it was a big mistake. Don’t count on the FlyAway driver picking you up at LAX. The ride up to the airport was fine, but the return trip was hell. I got my luggage just as the 9:45 am FlyAway came by. I chased it from Terminal 3 to Terminal 6 and then gave up. I waited at Terminal 6 for the 11:45 am FlyAway. It came by at noon and had no passengers on it. I was waiting under the green FlyAway sign as instructed, and stepped out into the crosswalk to wave down the driver. He waved me back onto the sidewalk and didn’t even stop. There were two other people waiting for him and waving as well. We waited another hour after that, but no Irvine FlyAways came. The other FlyAway drivers couldn’t help us and the automated phone system was useless. I ended up spending twice as much money and time to get home as I had budgeted - I had to take the Disneyland bus to Disneyland, a taxi to Anaheim station, and a train to Irvine station, finally making it home at 4 pm.
