Fly to Tokyo from Los Angeles (LAX) for $866

Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan

Deal: In case you missed this deal in Sunday’s Los Angeles Times, here is some incentive to get yourself over to Japan: Singapore Airlines is offering round-trip flights from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Tokyo, Narita, Japan (NRT), for $866 and up, including taxes and fees.

Caveats: This “sweet deal,” as categorized on the airline’s website, is for inbound and outbound travel Mondays through Thursdays only. You must stay a minimum of three nights — and not stay longer than six months.

When: Buy your tickets by Dec. 9, for departures on or before Dec. 10, 2008.

Why: Digest the dizzying bright lights of Tokyo, then board the Shinkansen to the temple-rich Kyoto.

Details: For information regarding cancellation and date change penalties, see Singapore Airlines‘ website.

Tested: For a trip in early December, I was given a rate off $866 on the Singapore Airlines website. Elsewhere, the best nonstop fare I could find from LAX to NRT was for $978 (including tax) on Korean Air, through the airline’s website. CheapTickets and Orbitz offer the Korean Air flights for $988.

Tip: Want to avoid overeating and/or heated mouthfuls of political discussion this Thanksgiving? Fly on Thursday, Nov. 27, for a single-helping tray of airplane food. The $866 fare is available on that Thursday too.
