Fare war! LAX to Honolulu (HNL) under $250 round trip, including tax

Earlier this morning Susan Derby mentioned the Airfare Watchdog Los Angeles (LAX)-Honolulu (HNL) fare deal starting at $231 round trip on American Airlines and a mid-November deal from CheapAir for $253. But those aren’t the only flights on sale between Los Angeles and Honolulu. Delta is in on the fare war too.

Go to Hawaii for the weekend: I used Kayak’s weekend search tool to see if I could find a cheap weekend getaway at these low rates. Sure enough, Delta had flights for next weekend (Friday Nov. 7-Tuesday Nov. 11) for only $243 round trip, including taxes. Note I chose a red-eye flight late Monday that got me into LAX early Tuesday morning.

Other round-trip fares to Honolulu under $250: I tested more fares on the airlines’ direct websites. Here’s what I found:

Delta: Leave Tuesday or Wednesday (Nov. 18-19) and return Sunday or Monday (Nov. 23-24) for only $243 round trip, including taxes.

American Airlines: Travel Dec. 3-7 for $243 round trip, including taxes.

By comparison, United flights in mid-November were $472 round trip including taxes and fees, and Continental had flights starting at $383 round trip including taxes and fees in early December.

What fantastic deals! I spent the last week of Sept. in Honolulu. Not everyone goes for the beaches — there were, and still are, some fabulous textiles exhibits in town right now. Don’t miss the Academy of Art, HiSAM, and the UH Art Museum if you take advantage of these airfares.
