Good morning, travelers!

Airline news | Northwest shareholders voted 75% in favor of the Delta-Northwest merger, which will create the world’s largest airline carrier. The airline will keep Delta’s name and have 800 aircraft with 75,000 employees. Northwest shareholders will get 1.25 shares of Delta stock for every share they own. Read “Northwest Holders Vote in Favor of Merger With Delta” [Bloomberg] and “Northwest Shareholders OK Delta Combo Plan” [U.S. News & World Report].

I like that Delta has a whole page on its website devoted to the merger and a state-by-state map of how it will affect travelers. Here is the page for California - showing nonstop service from Los Angeles to 49 destinations, including 15 in Mexico and Central America and Tokyo, Japan.

Travel destinations | Edward Hasbrouck, author of “The Practical Nomad” books and blog, has just returned from a 13-month, 80,000-mile trip that covered 28 countries and six continents. He rarely gives advice on where to go, rather offering travelers with tips on the how-to, but this time he’s offering 12 destinations from his recent trip that he highly recommends. Check out his blog to read where in France and Spain you might want to make a pit stop and why if he could pick one country in Africa he’d pick Ethiopia.

Travel deals | Do you subscribe to the DailyCandy Travel section? Wednesday, they sent out their “September Sales: Travel Deals and Steals.” I was particularly drawn to the Puerto Vallarta 40%-off hotel deal at Hacienda San Angel, which is part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group.
