Delta Airlines and Northwest Airlines to merge

Last week it was all about American Airlines stranding passengers from canceled flights.

Now the week begins with more air travel news: Delta Air Lines, according to the Associated Press, is reporting that it has reached an agreement to combine with Northwest Airlines — a move that would create the world’s biggest carrier.

The combined airline, which will be called Delta, will have an enterprise value of $17.7 billion and be based in Atlanta, the AP reports.

What does this mean for Southern California travelers? We’ll keep you posted.

— Mary Forgione, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

[Editor's note: As the LAT's aviation staff writer Peter Pae is reporting this evening, the Delta-Northwest deal still requires approval from the U.S. Justice Department, so it's unlikely to affect existing reservations on either airline for travel scheduled this spring or summer.

Early estimates suggest that if the merger passes DOJ muster, the deal would not be consummated until September 2008, at the earliest.]

Do you think that Northwest would honor accrued Delta miles? It would be great as I would use their destinations more frequently than Delta’s.
