Remember Wilma, the hurricane that wreaked havoc in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, and elsewhere, in 2005? Carnival Cruise Lines’ pier at Puerta Maya, in southwestern Cozumel, Mexico, was one victim of that storm, and it has been closed ever since. But it’s bouncing back, and stronger: Rebuilt to withstand a Category 5 hurricane, the pier officially reopens on Oct. 16, 2008.
The two-berth pier’s first visitors that day will be the Carnival Fantasy and the Carnival Ecstasy, which will bring a total of more than 4,100 passengers. These ships, and other Carnival ships that stop there, are expected to bring about 1.5 million visitors to Cozumel annually.
Also reopening will be Puerta Maya’s cruise center. Covering 9 acres, it holds shops and restaurants and also will serve as a transport hub for taxis, tour buses and rental cars.
