The rising cost of gas plus the weak dollar is causing families to reconsider travel abroad, and get the calculator out for domestic road trips. I had a vacation promotion come across my desk this morning that could inspire some hope. Costa Rica: LatinAmerica4Less has a six-night “Best of Costa Rica” tour for less than $1,000 including taxes and some meals.
Deal: The “Best of Costa Rica” package costs $766 and gets you round-trip airfare from Los Angeles (LAX) to Costa Rica (SJO), two nights’ standard hotel accommodations in each of these destinations: Arenal Volcano, Monteverde Cloud Forest and Manuel Antonio National Park. Transfers, breakfast and taxes are also included. Some airline taxes are additional. This rate is based on double occupancy and availability. There is a $320 single supplement fee. Read the full tour description for inspiration.
Caveat: If you read the fine print, you’ll see that it could be up to 24 hours before they call you back. I put a call in to ask a price question and am still waiting to get a call back. But it hasn’t been 24 hours…just one or two.
When: Book by May 9 for trips departing in Costa Rica on May 8, June 5, Aug. 21, Sept. 11, Oct. 16, Nov. 20 and Dec. 04, 2008.
Tested: It sounded like a good deal, but I wanted to know how much the airfare was if I were to take the trip on my own. I searched Kayak and found that a round-trip ticket from Los Angeles (LAX) to Costa Rica (SJO) came to $431 for the round-trip ticket including taxes (Aug. 20-30).

Perfect timing! My friend has been trying to make honeymoon plans in Costa Rica– this could be just what she’s looking for. Thanks Jen!

Hi Marilyn,
That’s great that you can pass on this deal. The company has a lot of trips worthy of consideration. I would have a tough time choosing between packages.

That’s not too bad of a price (assuming the hotels are decent). Don’t assume anywhere has air conditioning without checking though.
I’d assume the transfers are air conditioned, I’ve never seen a tour bus without it. So even as a single supplement, it seems pretty good.
Airport taxes are $26-ish (to leave). Don’t charge the taxes though, this time they charged it as a cash advance so I paid fees (never noticed that before).
The exchange rate has been pretty good lately about 500 colones to one dollar http://tinyurl.com/2kqp3d
But don’t take bills larger than $20, they don’t like them (a bit of counterfeiting). And don’t exchange at the airport (little shops will give you a better rate then they will). Use a local bank or ATMs.
I just came back from my fifth trip and love it there….

I live on Lake Arenal and this is the first time I’ve seen a good package at a good price.Anywhere.
Most of them want you to waste 2 days in San Jose and take you to Jaco beach… which is a dump !
I’d recommend this tour of the REAL costa Rica in a heartbeat !
BTW . You don’t need any AC in Monteverde or Arenal ( and won’t find any ).
It’s really not necessary at night in Manuel Antonio but the wife might prefer it for the hair adventures in the morning……
