The U.S. economic downturn is not just affecting the Vegas housing market — it’s crashing down on the casinos as well. Financial difficulties on the Strip may be fast approaching. Earlier this week, the Review Journal ran an article that opened our eyes to the fact that MGM Mirage (which owns 10 Strip hotel-casinos including the Bellagio, Mirage, Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand) is doing everything it can to meet its debt obligations.
Last week we wrote about some crazy, cheap Vegas hotel deals starting at $6.25 per night outside of town and many rooms under $50 per night on the Strip. But rates aren’t just dropping at the casino hotels already considered budget accommodations. Luxe hotels like the Four Seasons are beckoning tourists by dropping their prices considerably too.
What’s the best way to get a deal on a Vegas hotel room?

The casino hotels offer their deals to their biggest fans first. Those on the Mandalay Bay e-mail list were offered an exclusive Four Seasons deal called the “Vegas Escape.” It included rooms for $149 per night plus a $25 spa credit, with a two-night minimum March 10-May 14, 2009, based on availability. When I checked Hotels.com, the lowest priced room was going for $249-$329 per night, including a $50 resort and $25 spa credit in March and April.
Note: When I tried to book the Vegas Escape on the Four Seasons Las Vegas website — without going through the e-mail offer — I could still get the Vegas Escape deal for $149 per night, including the spa credit. But I wouldn’t have known to look for it had I not heard about it in the e-mail.

The $149.00 deal seems to be now nonexistent for weekends. As soon as I received the e-mail, I tried various weekends - there was one available at the $149.00 rate. An hour later it was gone. The weekend of April 10-12 seems to be one of the few where the discount deal is available at all. I feel a bit scammed by the Four Seasons to be honest and plan on canceling the reservation I did get ($209.00 as the $149.00 was conveniently no longer available).

I’m a travel consultant specializing in luxury travel. Yes, not very hip these days.
While $149 for the Four Seasons Vegas is about half to 70% of their regular rates, it doesn’t matter. Nobody is traveling. Cunard can advertise a 21 day cruise later this month for $1999 but people are staying at home by the fireplace.
So I’m no longer promoting travel deals (at least not much). I’m not promoting that the Euro and Pound are so cheap it appears to be absurd to stay home. Because it’s not. It’s OK to stay home and I’m going to concentrate on my student groups and philanthropic travelers who are keeping me from getting too depressed.

The Palazzo, Venetian, Wynn, Trump, Signature at MGM Grand — all these 5-star establishments suddenly produced very enticing prices this week:

I’m curious to know if they maintain these rates as March Madness descends upon them…anyone get any bargains booking for that often-traditional trip?

The lower seems to be working. The strip today was packed with pedestrians and traffic on the strip was a bit congested. I did not feel like we were in a recession - this probably the most people I have seen walking the streets in about 9 years

We’ve been posting promo codes for several years on Las Vegas Hotels at
http://www.destination360.com/forum/las-vegas-hotel-deals/2864-las-vegas-hotel-promo-codes.html
Over the past year we’ve seen a huge uptick in the deals were posted. Right now you can get 20-30% off every hotel. But you still need to shop for food and drink which will typically surpass the cost of the room per day.
