A new wave of Disney theme park celebrity advertisements from photographer Annie Leibovitz will hit newsstands later this year in Glamour, GQ, Vogue, the New Yorker and Vanity Fair.
Actress Rachel Weisz is Snow White, tennis star Roger Federer is King Arthur from “The Sword in the Stone” and actress Julie Andrews is the Blue Fairy from “Pinocchio” with actress Abigail Breslin as Fira from something called “Disney Fairies.”
They join Scarlett Johansson as Cinderella, Beyoncé as “Alice in Wonderland” and David Beckham as Prince Phillip from “Sleeping Beauty” who all previously posed for Leibovitz.
Says Weisz: “It’s every little girl’s dream.”
Bleech!

FYI: Just spotted a Rachel Weisz/Snow White billboard on the northbound I-5 Freeway between Valley View Avenue and Carmenita Road.

I don’t ‘get’ it, either. Disney characters are eternal and well known, so I don’t understand what swapping ‘em for celebs does for 1) awareness, or 2) park attendance. It seems all high-fashion and artsy, and clearly Disney is willing to spend lots of $$ running those glossy inserts. But what are we supposed to do with the ads? Do they make us think something different about Disney? More importantly, even if we do (think something different for a nanosecond), what are we supposed to do with those thoughts? Run out and book a visit? Doubtful. The ads are beautiful and artsy and a waste of effort. I’ve written about it a bit on my weblog if you’d like to check it out.
