Gray whales are passing us by: Currently swimming southbound off our Pacific shores, the mammals are in the midst of a long migration from their feeding grounds in the Bering and Chukchi seas to lagoons in Baja California, Mexico, where they will mate and bear calves, according to the American Cetacean Society.
During whale-watching season, you can learn how many gray whales have been recently spotted off the Palos Verdes Peninsula via a daily tally of sightings by naturalists. And, on Sunday, at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, you can celebrate the gray whales migrating along SoCal shores at the Whale Fiesta.
What: Now in its 39th year, the Whale Fiesta will offer a whole range of family-friendly fun, with some education thrown in. Over 20 marine-related organizations will be represented. Kids can partake in face-painting and crafts projects, watch puppet shows and crawl through an inflated whale. Also part of the day’s events will be a Whale Poets corner; a Great Duct Tape Whale Contest, in which participants of all ages can create their own whale; and, using sand on the beach, a group-build of a life-size Cuvier’s beaked whale.
When: Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Cost: Free
Parking: A free park-and-ride shuttle will be available at 22nd and Miner streets in San Pedro.
Contact: Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, (310) 548-7562
