Furloughed state employees get a break in Reno-Tahoe

February 25, 2009 10:03am

Reno Arch

It’s probably not what Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had in mind when he called for a mandatory furlough program for state employees to help ease the budget crisis in the Golden State.

But a handful of hotels and resorts in Reno and Tahoe are taking advantage of the crisis by offering state employees a free night’s stay when they book a room at a participating hotel. So, say you are a DMV worker who has been furloughed for a Friday. Now you can pay for Friday and Saturday nights and get Thursday or Sunday night free. (Fridays and Saturdays are not offered  free on this deal.)

But it’s not the only furlough deal out there. Squaw Valley is also offering bargains to state employees.

To get the deal, call (800) FOR-RENO (367-7366). You first have to show your state employee identification. The participating hotels and casinos are not forgetting that the furlough program means you are not getting paid for those days off. To help ease the financial pain, they are offering such breaks as a two-for-one dining voucher, two-for-one show tickets, 25% discounts on spa treatments and $25 in free casino play.

To see the list of participating hotels and to get more information, go to the furlough program website.

Affected by the California furlough? Go skiing at Squaw, Lake Tahoe for cheap

February 8, 2009 12:38pm

Squaw Valley

Have you been forced by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s mandatory furlough program to take a few days off? For those of you who haven’t heard, the Governator is making thousands of state workers stay home without pay two days a month (the first and third Fridays, for most employees) in an effort to save the state $1.3 billion over the next 17 months. For many employees a 10% income drop is nothing to joke about. But if there are some workers who see the furlough as a three-day weekend, have a look at Squaw Valley’s Furlough Friday ski deal.

Deal: Lift tickets for $30 each (normally $79 for adults) to all California state employees who can provide a valid state identification card or a recent (within one month) state of California paystub and valid photo ID.

Learn avalanche survival tips at Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe

January 26, 2009 12:49pm

Squaw Valley

Avalanches have always been a danger on the mountain, but during this ski and snowboarding season, the risks have seemed heightened. Slides proved fatal last month to skiers within boundaries at three U.S. resorts, including Squaw Valley USA in Lake Tahoe, where an avalanche killed an experienced skier.

The number of fatalities at resorts this year is unprecedented, according to a Denver Post report that “only three skiers died in in-bounds avalanches in the 15 ski seasons between 1990 and 2005.”

So the annual Steep & Deep Free Avalanche Awareness Clinic at Squaw Valley, on Friday, Jan. 30, seems more apropos than ever. Read the rest of this entry »

Lake Tahoe: Squaw Valley’s $35 ski/snowboarding deal for newbies

January 8, 2009 3:12pm

Squaw Valley USA

I’ll never forget the morning after my first day of snowboarding. I felt as if I’d been run over by a snowplow, I’d never been so sore in my life. But what a fun day I’d had on the slopes (well, on the one bunny slope), and I was eager to get back out again.

But lollygagging out there on my own without professional instruction, it took me a while to “get it” on the board, and I got a little banged up along the way. If I were to do it all over again, I would make sure Day 1 — and maybe Days 2 and 3 for that matter — included a lesson that would teach me to move more safely and effectively on the mountain (less recklessness = less hurt = more fun).

That’s my story with a simple moral, but if my revelations haven’t inspired you, then perhaps the matter of money will: Squaw Valley USA in Lake Tahoe is offering a superbly priced day package for beginners. Read the rest of this entry »

December 26, 2008 8:21am

Obama on the green

Good morning. If you celebrated Christmas — or the season in general — yesterday, I hope you enjoyed the holiday. Assuming you can digest just a tad more information, here’s today’s scoop:

Tahoe news | An avalanche in the Sierras yesterday led to the death of an experienced skier. At ski and snowboarding resort Squaw Valley USA, Randall Davis was in densely wooded terrain when he got trapped under several feet of snow. Two skiers were reported missing at Mt. Rose resort. Read. “1 skier killed, 2 missing, at Tahoe ski resorts.” Read the rest of this entry »

12 books of Christmas: ‘John Muir’s Botanical Legacy’

December 21, 2008 4:00pm

Nature\'s Beloved Son

Most coffee table books let the photos do the heavy lifting.

Not so “Nature’s Beloved Son: Rediscovering John Muir’s Botanical Legacy,” by Bonnie J. Gisel, with images by Stephen J. Joseph and foreword by David Rains Wallace (Heyday Books, $45).

Don’t misunderstand: It is beautifully illustrated with the species that Muir catalogued on his numerous journeys. (The book is divided into sections: “From Scotland to Wisconsin,” “Canada and Indianapolis,” “Kentucky to the Gulf of Mexico,” “California” and “Alaska.”)
