California hotel deals: Starwood’s third-night free special

Take your pick — La Jolla, Palm Springs, Mammoth, San Francisco, Sonoma, or staying right here in Santa Monica — Starwood is offering the third night free on stays at several of their California resorts through May 31, 2008. Be spontaneous, this deal needs to be jumped on.

Deal: Stay two nights (arriving Thursday, Friday or Saturday) at participating Westin, Sheraton, Le Meridien, Luxury Collection and Four Points hotels in California and get the third night free. This deal is good for new reservations with advance purchase only and has a three-day minimum and maximum.

Tested: When I tried the deal online for the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa, the deal had changed to buy three nights and get the fourth free. I couldn’t find any way to get the third-night deal. But a king bedroom was reduced from $796 to $597 (daily rate $199 per night, pre-tax). I checked a few other California hotels on the Starwood map and found the third-night deal good at the Sheraton Delfina in Santa Monica. Total price for a stay next week (May 22-25) was $538 before taxes at $269 a night.
