The Basin Complex fire that’s still raging in Big Sur is keeping Highway 1 closed from Palo Colorado Road to Limekiln State Park — shutting the Post Ranch Inn, Nepenthe restaurant, the Ventana Inn & Spa, the Henry Miller Library, Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn and all the cliff-hugging state parks such as Andrew Molera, Julia Pfeiffer Burns and Pfeiffer Big Sur. The entire Monterey Ranger District of Los Padres National Forest is shut as well.
So where can you stay in Big Sur these days or at least grab a burger?
What’s open
Coming from the south, the Ragged Point Inn & Resort has 30 rooms and a restaurant, and sits just 15 miles north of Hearst Castle.
Treebones Resort, which has 16 yurts and five campsites that overlook the ocean, also is open for business, according to its website. It’s about 25 miles north of Hearst Castle.
The towns of Gorda and San Simeon are open.
Coming from the north, Rocky Point Restaurant, 10 miles south of Carmel, is open and serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. And you can watch sea lions, harbor seals and even otters at Garrapata State Park and Point Lobos State Reserve, just south of Carmel.
And chances are, these places won’t be crowded.

Be aware that Big Sur conditions are volatile, that smoke gets in your eyes, & that you may have to cede place to emergency vehicles. Truly, this is not where you want to head right now, regardless of how badly your tourist revenues are needed. Send a check to a relief fund, but take your vacation elsewhere.
