Aman hotel to open next week at Summer Palace in Beijing

Aman hotel at the Summer Palace in Beijing

On Oct. 1, a new upscale hotel will open near Beijing, China, giving travelers a luxurious lodging option blissfully removed from the hustle and bustle of the Chinese capital.

The newest Aman group hotel occupies a cluster of 100-year-old courtyard dwellings just outside the East Gate of the fabled Summer Palace, about 10 miles northwest of China’s Forbidden City.

It is a testament to the attractiveness of the hotel’s Aman imprimatur and stunning location that it debuts nearly two months after the Beijing Olympics.

While high-end hotels have lately opened all over the Chinese capital, the odds are good that this one will be much sought after by travelers, who will only have to walk out the front door to see the garden estate around Kunming Lake, where the Qing Dynasty court took refuge during the heat of summer.

The hotel is small, with 18 rooms and 25 suites decorated in burnished clay tile and exposed wood beams. There are three restaurants, a spa and pool. Rates for doubles start around $480.
