San Francisco: Hike to rustic Marin mountain cabin

view from West Point InnAdventurers looking to stay close to nature will enjoy the much-loved West Point Inn on Mt. Tam in Marin County. Built in 1904, the inn once connected the railway to the stage coach at Stinson Beach and is still unknown to many Bay Area locals. It can be reached by a 2-hour hike from Mill Valley and Stinson Beach, or 45 minutes from the parking lot at Mountain Theater/Rock Springs or the Pan Toll Ranger Station. If you’re used to 4-stars, this would definitely be roughing it.

Deals: The West Point Inn is open to the public for $35/night (adults) and $17.50/night for children under 18. The Inn sleeps up to 25 people and can be rented out by the day for $700 (or $1,000 on major holidays). No weddings, bachelor parties, animals or kegs are allowed.

Caveat: There is no electricity at the West Point Inn. Propane generators are used for heat and light. Those staying overnight must bring their own sleeping bags, food, flashlights and towels.

When: Tuesday to Sunday – Summer 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Winter 11 a.m.–5 p.m.
