‘American Idol’ at the Rancho Bernardo Inn

How big of an “American Idol” fan are you — enough to stay in a hotel just because Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson did? The Rancho Bernardo Inn was home to the San Diego “American Idol” auditions that aired this week on Fox.

I don’t know who decides which hotels to use for the auditions, or how, but the reputation of the Rancho Bernardo Inn precedes itself. This resort, which has recently gone through $25 million of enhancements, has been a Mobil four-star award winner for 18 years and has held AAA four-diamond status for 31 consecutive years.

Deal: There are lots of specials and packages to choose from on the Rancho Bernardo Inn website. I liked the Girlfriends Getaway package, but it was unavailable both online and when I called. The Stay and Play package included accommodations for two, and each guest could choose either a 50-minute spa treatment or a round of golf.

Rooms start at $345 per night, or $382 including taxes and resort fees, for both weekdays and weekends. Breakfast and dinner for two could be added for another $100.

When: Ongoing, year-round package.
