Wondering where to take your American girl on vacation?
Well, if she’s just seen the film “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl” and adores the namesake dolls, the famed Algonquin Hotel has a special offer with her in mind.
Yes, that Algonquin — the 1902 beauty where members of the famed Round Table literary group (authors including Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, George S. Kaufman, Edna Ferber and even Harpo Marx) began meeting in 1919. They gathered in the Rose Room for a decade, according to the hotel’s online history.
The Algonquin Girl package includes a stay for one adult and one child, a $30 gift certificate to the American Girl store (which is right near the Algonquin), a diary and two tickets to a Broadway show or a baseball game (which, the hotel reminds us, is Kit’s favorite sport).
The cost is $394 per person, plus tax; available now through Oct. 1, 2008. Info: (866) 406-5341; www.algonquinhotel.com.

It’s enterprising of the Algonquin to try and attract new guests this way, but it’s ironic that the Depression-era heroine in this movie would not have had the slightest chance of staying at a hotel that charges $394 per person per night, plus tax.

I have had the pleasure of staying at the Algonquin several times and can tell you it was a wonderful experience! The rate is actually very good, considering it also includes theatre tickets, the gift certificate and the diary. Too bad my son isn’t a Kit fan!
