Alignment of Jupiter, Venus and a crescent moon still visible tonight

Alignment of the moon, Venus and Jupiter over Los Angeles on November 30, 2008.

Did any of you check out the alignment of Venus, Jupiter and the crescent moon on Sunday (Nov. 30)? It’s not too late–look to the southwest sky around sunset tonight (Dec. 1) and you should be able to see this rare occurrence.

Here’s what it looked like above Vista, California, when L.A. Times photographer Don Bartletti snapped this rare heavenly occurence.

Many of you chimed in when L.A. Times staff writer Hugo Martin posted an item with a photo of this same alignment–but it didn’t look like what appeared in the L.A. sky. (Go to that post to read more about this celestial event.)

Moon, Venus, Jupiter align over Phoenix in 1998.

The photo on the original blog post (above), which ran before prior to Sunday’s alignment, came from a NASA website and was shot over Phoenix in August 1998, Martin reports. Many of you rightly told us that this is different than what you could see in the skies over L.A.

Here are some out-of-the-way spots for star-gazing and meteor watching.

    That is really truely amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. tdrew007@gmail.com Says:

Could this venus/jupiter alignment be a literal sign of things to come?maybe as in May 2003 when we saw an even rarer planetary event with venus at the
apex of the other 5 major planets in formation of a pentegram!?
