UPDATE: Hawaii Superferry $5 inaugural fares (service suspended)

Hawaii Superferry gallery (LAT)While the Honolulu Advertiser reports that As environmentalists challenge Hawaii’s new inter-island ferry service in court, the Hawaii Superferry has decided to launch ahead of schedule today, August 26. It has also slashed its inaugural fares to such unbelievably low prices that even Jonathan Ornstein, CEO of Mesa Air Group (which runs Hawaii’s super-discount airline go!), voiced his approval, according to the Honolulu Advertiser.

Deal: Right now you can book $5 passenger and $5 vehicle fares, including taxes and fees, for daily sailings in both directions between Oahu and Maui or Kauai (i.e., there’s no direct service between Maui and Kauai). Although some voyages are already sold out, you can still get passenger and vehicle tickets for sailings through September 5, 2007. Reservations must be made online or through the Hawaii Superferry call center, which is open daily from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. (HST). The special inaugural fare is not available for walk-up ticket purchases at the piers.

Update (Aug. 29): The Hawaii Supreme Court ruled on Thursday, Aug. 23, that the Hawaii Superferry must conduct an environmental assessment, which could take months. Whether or not the Superferry will be allowed to continue operations during that time after environmental groups seek an injunction tomorrow remains to be seen. On Monday, Aug. 28, a state judge issued an order blocking the Superferry from docking on Maui until further hearings on Sept. 6. After protestors (including those on surfboards and in kayaks and canoes) tried on Sunday, Aug. 26, to stop the Superferry from docking on Kauai, the Hawaii Superferry has suspended its service to Kauai, because the U.S. Coast Guard can’t guarantee its safe passage into Nawiliwili Harbor.

Have you ridden the Superferry? Tell us about your trip by posting in the Comments section below.

More…details: Customers who have already purchased tickets for travel between August 28 and September 5 will automatically be given the special fare instead and their credit card payments will be refunded for the difference.

When: These inaugural fares are available now through September 5, 2007.

Caveat: The special fare is not available to commercial customers or groups.

Why Go: It’s a cheap way to test out the new inter-island ferry service for yourself.

Why Not: here. Cancellations; follow this link for a list of Cancellation FAQs

THE HAWAII SUPREME COURT TOLD THESE MONSTERS THEY COULD NOT PROCEED UNTIL AND UNLESS AN EIS WAS COMPLETED.

THIS “EARLY SPECIAL” WAS IN DIRECT DEFIANCE OF THAT RULING AND NOW WE NEED THE TRUTH ABOUT THE UNWELCOME NIGHTMARE THIS HATED AND UNWANTED-THIS DANGEROUS AND INHUMANE “STUPIDFERRY” THAT WILL FURTHER TRASH AND OVERBURDEN THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF OUR PRECIOUS KAUAI-

WE NEED THE REST OF THE WORLD TO RESPECT AND PROTECT WHAT THEY SO LOVE TO “VISIT”-
STOP THE SUPERFERRY AND PUNISH THE LAWBREAING CORPORATIONS AND GOVERNOR LINGLE FOR IGNORING THE LAW ITSELF_AND THE WILL OF WE THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE.

    FOLLOW THE MONEY.

  2. Jai Says:

Superferry turned back by over 50 surfers and several canoes cruising the bay along with a huge turnout of protesters on land Tuesday night at Nawiliwili on Kauai - Superferry needs to make amends for what they started along with the State of Hawaii - they have tried to be above sound environmental law for economic motives.

Read about it in today’s news.

  3. LAnative Says:

You have got to be kidding me, especially the comments above. I’m all in favor of a happier and healthier environment, but since when was a ferry company a bunch of “monsters”? A ferry company would be a boon to Hawaii — getting from island to island is inordinately expensive right now and causes plenty of environmental damage through aircraft exhaust. I can’t believe that Hawaiians would seriously oppose this.

  4. Eric Rogers Says:

Oh for Pete’s sake, let the dumb ferry run. Not everybody has the dough the protesters seem to have. For crying out loud, it’s not like one ferry is going to ruin all the waters around the islands. Hello? Earth to Hawaii!!

  5. bumpy Says:

The worst part about this whole deal is how the so-called “protesters” treated the passengers, throwing rocks, yelling, screaming obscenities…this has become an embarrassment to the whole idea of civil disobedience.

All too often, the radical activists in Hawaii are willing to demonize and vilify the innocent bystanders in their struggle. They could have taken the moral high-ground on this one, but they acted like a bunch of thugs instead.

  6. frank Says:

If this is environmentally damaging then so is every cruise ship and cargo vessel that docks in Kauai…

Fine for those who want to live in the 1700′’s, not fine for the grown-ups who want to live in the real world.

  7. brad Says:

Only a very small group opposes this Ferry. Some people just need a cause…

  8. Koapaka Says:

I don’t recall ever witnessing a cruise ship delivering hundreds of cars to Kauai, an island that has an old two-lane highway which is rated over capacity. “one ferry isn’t going to ruin all the waters around the islands” First, you probably are not from Hawaii and it sort of shows by your comment. Second, Native Alaskan’s may find that saying similar to the promise made by the oil companies that oil would not be a factor on the environment. Grown ups can visit elsewhere without acting as if they had come from the 1700’s “Live in the real world.” The protestors….let us revisit the news footage and figure out the real culprits behind the protest…..they sure don’t look to be of Hawaiian ancestry…..they look a little to fair skin and speak proper English….they can’t really be from Kauai….a mainland transplant? Hmmmmm! Humans are greedy and the root cause of planet earth’s distress.

  9. brian Says:

those who don’t live in the islands, and therefore do not understand the negative impact the superferry presents, would be best to educate themselves before preaching in it’s favor. the issue here is simple- they have done absolutely no environmental impact studies. without information no one can accurately predict it’s impact.

  10. Jack Reams Says:

What a great way to go interisland. How can a few surfers dictate to the thousands of people whose travel will be so much easier compared to packing & unpacking to go by air. There is also the advantage of taking the rental car and items you want to take from one island to the next without checking in the car at one spot and arranging a rental at the next. I wish they had this years ago when we traveld Hawaii a lot. The air travel is much more poluting than this means of transport. GO FERRY.

  11. Gustavo Gutierrez Says:

Other areas of Polynesia utilize ferries for the purpose of allowing people to move from island to island.

So what makes use of ferries in Hawaii unacceptable but allowed in French Polynesia?

  12. Stuart Says:

The Hawaiians used fast double-hulled canoes to cross the channel between Maui, Kauai and Oahu. If anyone blocked the canoes from landing, they were summarily executed.

Today the US government is charged with protecting the harbors from terrorists and other lawbreakers., yet is incapable of doing so.

The people traveled between the islands for centuries by sea. It is high time they are allowed that right again, and US government better act accordingly to those who block Federal regulated harbors.

  13. Native of a tourist town Says:

Thanks for standing up to the ferry!
I wish that my town had been stronger, earlier and not dropped so many other priorities in favor of catering to the tourist trade. While they do bring in money, the overall degradation of the town wasn’t worth it. Now, the consequences are beginning to be felt and the economic health of the region is suffering.

Additionally, very few of the kids I grew up with - most of us at least second or third generation natives - still live there because the economy is so skewed toward visitors. The charm of the town, due in large part to the continuity of the population, is draining away; it seems more disney-like each time I go home.

In the long term, we must remember that the attributes that attracted residents and tourists have to be protected. If that means that it is slower or more expensive or harder to access, so be it.

Resist mega-anything - ferries, hotels, arenas, restaurants - in favor of the intimate. Decline the pre-fab experiences for the true nature of the place.

We will be happier of those choices than the cheap thrills that our predecessors choose for us to live with today.
    —————-

Oh, and about the passengers. They are not innocent bystanders - - with out their financial support, the ferry would not run.

  14. Manoa Says:

The potential environmental impact extends beyond what the ferry may deliver to the harbors. As people bring their cars from one island to the other, they may also bring with them the threat of invasive, unwanted biohazard. While it is obiously a minority of cars that might carry a threat like this, it is by no means a negligible number. There are many people on Oahu who take their vehicles off road for hunting, agricultural, or simply exploratory reasons, and their is every reason to believe that, given the opportunity, these same people will travel with their vehicles to the outer islands and do the same, wouldn’t you? Among the islands in the chain, Oahu is the one most plagues by exotic (i.e. plant and animal life not native to the Islands) species. There is every reason to believe that at least some of these species will now, finally, be able to make it to the outer islands as road vehicles make unchecked passage from one to the other. Say hello to the Superferry and “convenience” (inter-island ferry fare will be roughly equivalent to inter-island air fare), and begin to say goodbye to native bio-diversity.
    Aloha!

  15. MauiDJ Says:

    First off.
To all of you who have posted comments about how people are overreacting to this situation. Well is is very obvious from your words you do not live here.
You do not understand the many reasons why we do not want this monster on our waters.
I hear all comments about cheap travel but in fact using SuperFerry will be very expensive indeed and a lot more than air travel and a car rental for the average week-end getaway.
The invasive speices threat is very real and must not be ignored.
The ferry is being financed by public money from a system that is unable to provide funds for more important needs.
It is being run by a group of men who have a track record of bankrupting companies.
It has been introduced without any impact statements which is against the law.
So to all you vacationers and back seat drivers. get your facts straight and understand that we live here for ourselves not you. It is our responsibility to protect these islands as best we can.
Without a full impact statement how can this be said to have been acheived in this instance.
We just want the facts before important and irrevocable decisions like these are made.
And to the person who put down the surfers for their actions. This was simply one of the greatest peices of civil dispobedience this country has seen in decades. It makes my heart swell with pride that there are still people who believe in something enought to fight corrupt governments that infects all our lives.

  16. Rob Says:

The attitude of those who live in Hawaii has been, again and again, hatred and contempt for visitors. I see this and my opinion is, if that is what they want I am more than happy to stay away. Let them be a poor backwater without the lifeblood of tourism. Hawaii is ridiculously overrated. Go someplace fun like San Diego, Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago or New York.

  17. Frank Says:

You guys there are so busy “protecting” the islands that you have created a business climate that has caused half of the guys you grew up with to leave for jobs in places like Vegas or Texas (like my college roommate who grew up in Hilo)

Oh, I forgot-your protester buddies all live off of Daddys trust fund and can afford to surf and protest, instead of work like the rest of us…

Finally-since your island is dependent on tourism for it’s economic survival, us lowly Haole tourists do have a say in the well-being of the islands-in fact, if you keep things as expensive as they are now, discourage the development of tourist infrastructure, and be as unwelcoming towards tourists as the posts on this board seem to be, then you cause even more of your friends and relatives to leave for the mainland…oh-I forgot that you have a trust fund and therefore a real-world economy doesn’t matter…

Since you are part of the United States, “your” islands are also “ours”

  18. Ray Says:

Though I am not a native of the islands I have been fortunate enough to visit many times and earn my masters degree at UH. As a biologist and supporter of common sense I am against the ferry for several reasons. The transfer of invasives species will definately occur reducing the biodiversity of the native flora and fauna. The affect on whales has not been properly investigated. Distant beaches and shorelines of outer islands will now be opened up to large portions of the population reducing the natural protection afforded to flora and fauna in these remote areas. The thought of adding a couple hundred more cars to the already crowded roads is by far one of the most infuriating aspects of this plan. Have any of you ever driven in traffic on Kauai, it rivals the worst nightmares on the 405 in L.A. except with a better view. It shouldn,t take over an hour to get home when you live less than ten miles from work. This is daily life on Kauai. More vehicles is not an answer. I applaud the residents of Kauai for standing up for their Island. Who would want: increased traffic and congestion, increased degradation of limited coastal resources and increased development on an island with very limited space and poor infrastructure. This project is being done to further the dependency on tourism and line the pockets of a few lawbreakers. It is ill dvised and poorly planned out. Don’t let Honolulu happen to the outer Islands.

  19. Cindy Largo Says:

I have lived on Maui, and been to several other Hawaiian islands.
The highways and infastructures on these islands is already severly impacted by too many vehicles as it is.
The harbour area in Maui , next to the airport, is very conjested. Parking everywhere is scare. Roads gridlocked.
Introduction of non-native plants and insects has already done damage to the islands and is that much
easier to spread with cars traveling inter-island.
Hawaiian waters are the birthplace of the endangered humpback whale whose babies are unable to flee a speeding ferry.
Superferry was asked to undertake a complete Environmental Impact Statement, but they wanted to do only a limited EIS conducted by their own people.
We know how that doesn’t work. The people of Hawaii
have laws already in place that the Superferry, wanted to skirt. Why is that? And, why would you think people
    are immature to protest??

  20. dick bohanon Says:

why can ferries operate all over the world but not hawaii?
if hundreds of cars arrive on the ferry, wont they
    also be departing?
enviromental impact should not be disregarded
but to eliminate a potentially important service makes no sense.
come to terms with this and find a solution!
will compromise ever find a place in this world?

  21. MauiDJ Says:

    To Frank and Rob.
I have not read one post on this forum by a resident or native of Hawaii expressing “hatred and contempt” or “unwelcoming towards tourists” as you both stated.

“Hawaii is ridiculously overrated. Go someplace fun like San Diego, Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago or New York.” Wow, if that is how you feel Rob, I guess you will not be visiting any time soon. :)

As for the ridiculous statement that the surfers blockading the Ferry were all trust fund kids. That sounds like an extreme case of envy…or plain ignorance. These were local kids, moms, dads ready to put their lives in harms way to protest an illegal enterprise that threatens their life and wellbeing.

And finally Frank…just because Hawaii is a part of the United States of America certainly does not make these islands ‘Yours”.

It is obvious from both your statements that you know nothing about the reasons behind this issue. Before you make these very personal attacks on the people directly affected by this situation it might be benefitial if you researched and understood the problem and reason behind the anti ferry sentiment.
But as it seems you hold only “contempt and hatred” for the Hawaiian Islands and its residents…. don’t bother…just stay home will ya.
    Aloha…….

  22. koapaka Says:

“The attitude of those who live in Hawaii has been, again and again, hatred and contempt for visitors. I see this and my opinion is, if that is what they want I am more than happy to stay away. Let them be a poor backwater without the lifeblood of tourism. Hawaii is ridiculously overrated. Go someplace fun like San Diego, Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago or New York.” Please be our guest and go to visit those places and be certain to leave a tip that is more than 25 cents. The people that work in service industry may depend on you. We sure wouldn’t want someone that show irresponsible and adolescent behavior from visiting our islands and coming away being unhappy. Do you really care?
The entire matter concerning the Hawaii Superferry is regarding the transportation of local people, vehicles and locally grown products between the islands. This brings up the concern of envasive species, marine mammals and the environment. Now, where do lowly haole tourist, hatred and contempt for visitors fit into play?
Daddy’s trust fund….do you seriously believe that the fair skin, blonde hair, blue eye, mainland transplant sitting on the surfboard or wading at the channel opening is of native Hawaiian ancestry. Look in the mirror before you answer…you don’t have to be a hater. Everyone in Hawaii works hard at two or more jobs to earn a decent wage and support our families so that we could take time off to surf….and we take ownership or our land and cherish the resources and beauty that is provided to us by the creator unlike our fellow countrymen in the lower 48. How do you earn a degree? study, retention and hard work or daddy’s trust fund? Get the facts straight and STOP making matters worse by inserting fictitious accounts of what knowledge you lack concerning this matter.

    Aloha!

  23. wslc Says:

The Superferry did this to themselves. They were in cahoots with the Lingle administration to evade the requirements of state environmental law. If they had just done the EA or EIS when they started their PR spinning several years ago, they’d be legally operating now.

As for blaming the Coast Guard, that’s ridiculous. They took the right approach with the Kaua`i protesters who were exercising their 1st amendment rights. If you’re mad at Bush about this, then complain to him about his cheerleader, Linda Lingle, who had her administration break state environmental law in order to cut her campaign contributors at the Superferry a big break. Scammers and liars, all of them.

  24. kanaka Says:

To LA native, What do you know haole? As you live in a filthy, congested and morally bankrupt urban nightmare of a city, you’d be better off looking to your own backyard. The jet drive motors on these big catamarans churn up the seafloor of the harbors they enter, choking any living thing including coral with silt. Let the people that actually live at and use these areas on a daily basis deal with the issue.

  25. BeefMasterX Says:

The eviros are tools of the airlines. Don’t be a tool, support the ferry and affordable inter-island travel!

  26. MauiDJ Says:

    Hey BeefMastersX.
    affordable interisland travel eh?
    How’s this for affordable.
I just went on the SuperFerry site and booked a weekend trip in mid November for 2 adults, 2 children and a small car.
    Round trip Maui/Oahu.
    Total cost $627.85.
The same trip on Go Airlines plus a rental car would cost less than $400 depending on the car.
I don’t have to be a tool of the airlines to see that the SuperFerry is anything but affordable.
Why can’t you get your facts right before attacking those of us who are affected by this and have taken the time to uncover the truth.
    Aloha.

  27. Mike C Says:

As one of the surfers blocking the harbor, I can say that we were a diverse community united in saving our precious island. I was born and raised here and am saddned to see another group of rich investors telling us what we need. We are not trust fund babies, only concerned citizens who are willing arrest and felonies standing up for what we believe is right. Kids, grandparents and everyone in between was protesting in a collabritive effort to thwart a enterprise that is being forced upon us. I must say that I have not met one single person on this island that is for the vessel, its just simply not wanted on the outer islands. If you come visit, fly a plane and rent a car and be sure to remember to leave. We have a finate set of resources, and a road that has only two lanes, with traffic getting worse and worse daily. You mainlanders are naive in thinking you can comment on a situation that you know nothing about. It runs much deeper than some surfers blocking port. Why do you think the State Police, the Kauai Police, DNLR rangers, and the USCG woriking together could not secure the port? Because they themselves dont want the ferry and everone the governer and DOT is telling them to arrest is their friends or relatives. The Superferry is not wanted here and will create civil unrest if she decides to force her way back to Kauai. Let me tell you that us Kauaians are a strong and unified people. Paddling infront of the huge vessel was the best surf I had all summer and didnt even catch a wave!

  28. Sara Benson Says:

    Thanks for your comments, everyone.

The debate here has taken the shape of islanders vs. mainlanders. However, as one reader has pointed out, tourists were not allowed to take rental cars on the Hawaii Superferry, which means that anyone who had booked a vehicle passage on the Superferry owns a car and resides at least part-time in Hawaii. Obviously, this is at least as much of a debate between those who live in the islands, as it is between islanders and mainlanders.

It would be great to hear from those who live in Hawaii and are in favor of the Superferry. There must be some residents who do not oppose it, otherwise no tickets would have been sold for transporting vehicles on the Superferry. After all, it’s not tourists taking cars on board.

    – Sara Benson, L.A. Times Travel Deal Detective

  29. abcdefg Says:

    to sara,
you can find tons of people who support the ferry in Hawaii. Here is one forum - http://forums.ibsys.com/viewmessages.cfm?sitekey=hon&Forum=222&Topic=16500
I am born and raised on Oahu. Im tending towards not being in favor of the superferry, for the sake of the laws not being followed( the need for an EIS). Just follow the law and do things by the book. We all know the state & superferry is in for the money, but couldnt you do it respectfully no matter how asinine the laws are? They would have a had overwhelming support without all the taint had they done things properly. I realize how idealistic it is to assume that things happens this way, but i can hope right?

My experience in hawaii suggest that most people on Oahu are in favor of the Ferry because it will bring options to interisland travel. This transport is primarily targetted for “locals” and more importantly a family of more than 4 people. This is the target market the superferry is trying to address.

The majority of the people live on Oahu and are detached from the issues dealt with by interisland folks. I think the media spins has been heavily in favor of the majority, which plays into the majority perspective.
People are attacking race, politics, pointing fingers. In the end the issue is not the EIS but a question of how hawaii deals with business, and the old boy networks. I think the blame is pointed at the superferry but i think there are more than one group to blame. This is complex and even i am trying to filter fact from fiction.

  30. Maikaio Says:

I live on Kauai and my girlfriend lives on Oahu. The smartest thing you can do in life is listen to Bruce Lee. He said, “One should never be for or against anything because he or she has now limited his or her possibilites.” Think about it. If you are against the Superferry, you can never use its services, you can never buy goods being shipped by it. You can never utilize it’s service or you are a hypocrite. If you are for the Superferry, then you close your mind to the issues that may arise. Therefore, it is best to not waste your energy on such matters. Focus on improving yourself and being the best person possible. When you can serve your fellow human beings. And keep your mind open and your emotions from getting the best of you. Mahalo!

  31. Mokule'ia Says:

Where is the Impact study for all the other vessels sailing in and around the islands? Why isn’t anyone screaming about them? What about the commercial fishing vessels? Certainly they have done more damage to the environment than the Superferry will ever do. “I don’t recall ever witnessing a cruise ship delivering hundreds of cars to Kauai” -The environmental Impact Study isn’t for the road system on Kauai, it’s for the harbor and surrounding waters! The silent majority in these islands support the Super Ferry. Get over it, Haole surfer dudes.

  32. Joe Says:

I support the superferry. How can the superferry bring in more traffic, what’s the difference from a person bring their car to the neighbor island by the superferry instead of renting a car. The superferry had brought 300 jobs to Hawaii, give the people more options to travel whether by the ferry of plane. Majority of the people in Hawaii want the superferry and since Hawaii is democratic, majority rules. Why does the superferry need an EIS when clearly NCL, Young Brothers, and Matson did not have to take an EIS even toe the state and the supreme court said they did not need an EIS about year ago. The Superfery did an environment assessment, its on their website. It seems that protesters in Kauai have a strong hate towards people in Oahu. I think protesters in Kauai did more harm than good. If the superferry leaves hawaii the repercussion would be devastating , 300 peopel will be out of a job, the sate would lose millions of dollars which the tax payers will have to pay, and it will ruin Hawaii’s reputation to do business.

  33. Santiago Says:

I am not a native, but I lived on Hawaii for two years, and I have lost track of how many times I have been there on vacation. I love the islands. I agree, a full environmental study should be, and should have been, done before the first ship sailed. My concern is that if the study is favorable towards the ferry, will it really change anyone’s mind. I think many fear change. The fear of the environment being contaminated by cars is real, but what about people and their luggage. Look at the number of non native species that have been introduced to this country before the automobile was invented. The islands are not separate countries. They make up one state. Hawaii has the opportunity to exercise the type of controls that would hold the introduction of unwanted species to a minimum. One last thing. If Maui is worried about the impact of increased automobile traffic on its roads, then shut down the rental car agencies at the airport and hotels. Thousands of tourist come to that island every day. Many of us rent a car before we leave the airport or hotel. When we visit another island, like Kauai, the first thing we do when we get there is rent a car. Growth is sometimes painful.

  34. BlognDog Says:

My god, people, if those of you with genuine environmental concerns really want to take grass roots action that will protect the environment, why aren’t you at the AIRPORT, shutting down the flights that pump 5x as much greenhouse gases into the atmosphere as a ferry trip does? And what is with loading something as ordinary as an inter-island ferry service with all manner of hidden agendas and ulterior motive? It’s a class warfare thing, it’s a mainlander vs. islander thing, it’s a corporations vs. individuals thing, it’s people vs. profit thing — it seems to be everything but a transportation thing.

Roundtrip Oahu to Kauai: 12,000 gallons
Rountrip Oahu to Big Island: 16,000 gallons
Additional roundtrip Oahu to Maui: 12,000 gallons
Total gallons burned per day in the Hawaiian islands when second ferry arrives: 52,000 gallons!

What’s this about a fuel surcharge? Did you know there’s a 30 percent fuel surchage each way per passenger and per vehicle? Check out the fare schedule and do your calculations. I can book an air/car package and get a hotel to boot for a couple hundred less than it costs to ride the Superferry. Superferry has been deceptive all along about its surcharge. It’s call BAIT and SWITCH. Look at the fares and DO THE MATH!!!

Superferry is not convenient: Round your kids up at 3 in the morning on Oahu, because Superferry departs for Maui at 6:30 a.m. You must be onboard by 6 a.m., therefore it is recommended you get to the port 1 + 1/2 hours early. It took Superferry 55 minutes to unload only 90 cars the last time it sailed into Maui, not the 20 minutes promised by ferry officials. That’s because the ferry entrance is just 20 yards from the busiest intersection on Maui. In Kauai, Superferry arrives at 6 p.m. right in the middle of horrible rush hour traffic on a tiny island that cannot support the amount of vehicles coming and going to Superferry. Then it leaves for Oahu at 7 p.m., arrives at 10 p.m. Factor in an additional overnight stay to your cost of riding the “affordable” Superferry.

Halliburton of Hawaii: Superferry Chairman of the Board is John Lehman, a longtime neo-con of the Bush Administration who co-authored the nefarious Project for a New American Century and our involvement in the Iraq War. He still touts that Iraq was responsible for 9/1l and other such untruths. He is such a right wing idiologue that he was actually forced out of the Reagan Administration for his extreme views. The Superferry Board consists of others from Lehman’s company, including Terry White, VP of Superferry, who was involved with American Classic Cruise Lines, which filed the largest bankruptcy in the history of a U.S. Maritime Administration-back loan, the same U.S. agency that has backed a $140 million loan for Superferry!!

Why is this relevent and why did Superferry build a vessel twice the size recommended by the vessel’s maker for interisland travel with a fuel capacity of 58,000 gallons?

Because Superferry is a military transport vessel designed to transport Stryker brigades and military interisland under the guise of a passenger ferry, just like the Westpac Express in Japan. Don’t take my word for it. John Lehman himself said so to the Pacific Business News in 2005. Superferry is for military purposes paid for by unsuspecting Hawaii taxpayers. Do you smell a rat? I do. It’s called Hawaii Superferry.
