If steep summer fares have been keeping you from traveling to Europe, maybe it’s time to consider late-summer and early fall flights. Air France is having a sale right now that’s good for travel to Europe during most of September and October. If you can handle a few stops, the price drops even more with alternate airlines.
Deal or no deal? Fly Mondays–Wednesdays to get the best rates during the Air France late-summer/fall sale. I found a flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to London (LHR) Sept. 3–17 for $420 each way, before taxes. The total bill came to $1,013, and the flight was nonstop both ways. I also tested booking a flight between Los Angeles (LAX) and Paris (CDG) Sept. 3-10 and fares were $455 each way before tax. The total price came to $1,070 and there was one stopover each way.
Those fares seemed about right to me, but I wanted to double check and, sure enough, I found an airline that will provide a cheaper fare for the same route. I searched the same London route and dates on Kayak and found Brussels Airlines brings the fare down to $875, including taxes, if you can stomach two stops.
Air France booking tip: Don’t stress departing Mondays–Wednesdays too much. Leaving Thursdays–Sundays typically costs $30 more each way.
When: Purchase by July 8 for travel from Sept. 1–Oct. 29, 2008
Contact: Air France, (800) 237-2747
