$99 hotel sale until 9/09/09 on Hotels.com: Great options in San Diego, Las Vegas, Palm Springs

A large swimming pool is one of several water attractions at the Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa in Rancho Mirage, which has recently undergone a $35-million face-lift. The remodeled, 444-room resort can now claim to be one of the more luxurious offerings in the Coachella Valley. Elegant yet family-friendly, the resort's main draw for kids is Splashtopia, a mini water park with two 100-foot water slides. It also sports a sand beach and a 425-foot lazy river.

There are 750 hotel properties on sale for just $99 or less per night on Hotels.com. In the spirit of Sept. 9, 2009, the auspicious date is also the deadline for booking the deal. When I checked out the sale I quickly found many three-star hotels under $100 (and several that were only two-star). But I did find some four-star hotels when I searched by individual cities such as San Diego,  Las Vegas and Palm Springs.

San Diego: The Hotel Solamar, a Kimpton hotel close to Petco Park downtown is marked down from $189 to $99 per night. I found the price good on both dates I tested, Sept. 8 and Sept. 29-30 (when the Dodgers are in town playing the Padres).

W San Diego is also included in the $99 promotion. This four-star property in downtown San Diego was also available for $99 per night when the Dodgers are in town at the end of the month as well as the weekend of Sept. 18-20. But rates were $187 per night the weekend of Sept. 11-13.

Las Vegas: Not all the rooms in the sale are $99. There are 10 hotels priced at $30 and under. In addition the Flamingo was $50 per night (though I didn’t see that rate for any weekends in September) and Palms Resort & Casino was promoted at $70 per night. When I tested the Palms rate, I found an even better deal on Sept. 8-10 with standard rooms at an average nightly rate of $55 on a second-night-free deal. The price came to $122 after taxes for both nights. Two nights in a junior suite was $177 after taxes. Rooms at the Mirage in the center of the Strip were $90 per night, pre tax.

Palms Springs: I found the $99 rate good midweek at the much-loved Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa (pictured) on several dates in September. The four-star Colony Palms Hotel was priced at $79 per night.

When: Book by Sept. 9 for travel Sept. 7-30, 2009
