Check out the November 2007 issue of Budget Travel for the feature “50 Totally Charming Hotels for Under $150.” The selections span the globe from Argentina to Tanzania including two in or near Los Angeles. Casa Malibu and Figueroa Hotel were 2 of 4 noted hotels in the United States.
The list gives you a quick description of the hotel, contact information, website and, of course, price with tax. But it’s the slideshow that will leave you drooling. You might even be inspired to build an entire trip around one of these hotels. It was the 16 balcony Anemomilos Apartments in Greece that got to me.
Tip: Also try Budget Travel’s Web-only hotel database to find an even cheaper hotel within your budget.
I tested it out with a search for a hotel ($75-$100) in the U.S. The search returns hotels that have been pulled from the magazine’s archives and it gets updated regularly. The Calistoga Inn was returned in my search, the only one in California.

I just loved this, as I too am always on the lookout for a bargain. While perfectly capable of extravagance, I like to conserve on hotel costs so I can indulge myself in other areas during my trips. When I’m in traveling to a major city, I’ll often book my room in a nearby suburb. For San Francisco, for example, I like to stay in Berkeley — it’s just a short jaunt across the bay into SF, and the rooms are much less expensive than their San Francisco counterparts. Here are some of my picks.
Check them out, save some money, and enjoy!
