The 2008 winners of the Responsible Tourism Awards, which I blogged about in June, have been announced, and New Zealand has emerged as the overall winner for its environmentally and culturally sensitive tourism strategies and practices. Contest judges selected the country for “proving that it is possible to develop a national strategy which uses tourism to help make better places to live and to visit.” In this contest with 13 categories, New Zealand also won in the best destination category.
Founded by Responsible Travel.com and sponsored by Virgin Holidays, the Responsible Tourism Awards have been going since 2004. For this year’s showdown, the general public nominated tourism entities for various categories, then judges made the final selections. Following are several of the other winners. See this website for a full list.
– Best large hotel/accommodation (more than 50 rooms): Kingfisher Bay Resort, Fraser Island, Australia
– Best small hotel/accommodation (fewer than 50 rooms): Nkwichi Lodge, Mozambique
– Best cruise or ferry operator: Holland America Line, USA
– Best volunteering organization: Camps International, United Kingdom
– Best in a marine environment: Ecoventura, Ecuador
– Susan Derby, Special to the Los Angeles Times

YOUR AWARDS ARE A BIT OF A JOKE, N’EST PAS? New Zealand!! Please…I left this island nightmare two years ago after living there for five…I found both North and South Islands generously polluted with farmland DDT flows into the rivers and surrounding sea, extremely low fresh water levels, over fishing, enormous clear cutting, haphazard policies regarding the orchard business, low unliveable wages, poor housing, a lack in timely and up to date health care, poor food quality, etc., etc. YOU NEED TO SEND SOMEONE TO NEW ZEALAND WHO IS UNBIASED AND CAN SEE IT FOR WHAT IT IS…And, please, let’s not even begin to discuss the dismal relations that exist between Maori and pakehas…

@PJAndros
1) “your awards” - don’t think they are anything to do with the LA Times.
2) your comment is really interesting, but mentions nothing related to NZ’s TOURISM strategies, so bears no relevance.
