Good morning, travelers! How was your weekend? It might be Monday but the good news is that it’s a short work week with a holiday on the other end. Have a look at our Fourth of July posts if you haven’t already (Santa Barbara, Oahu, California and beyond).
Destination Gas Station: If you’re really mad about the rising price of gas (average price: $4.60 in Los Angeles–Long Beach according to AAA), you might want to consider a trip to San Bruno in the Bay Area where one gas station is letting customers take out their frustrations on the weekends by dunking a man dressed as a Shell employee. Discuss: What do you think of Delta’s new policy of charging $25 for domestic/Canada and $50 on international SkyMiles award tickets? Is it fair since it’s being categorized as a fuel surcharge?
Road Trip: U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory is experimenting with lithium-ion batteries to try and make them cheaper and more durable in an effort to bring plug-in hybrids to consumers. Senior engineer Tony Markel’s 2006 Prius gets 100 miles to the gallon. Read: Uncle Sam Rolls in a 100-MPG Solar Plug-In Hybrid [WIRED]
Hotel deals: Hotwire is having a Fourth of July sale and rooms at four-star hotels are going for $119 per night midweek (this week) in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. There are savings on hotels across the country, but that was the best local deal I spotted from its promotion.

Haha, a surcharge for redeeming a rewards ticket? Oh boy, they just keep nickel and diming airline passengers.
Over at Amtrak their guest rewards program does not charge a surcharge for redeeming tickets. Happy flying.
