Airlines cutting summer fares

In a sign of uncertainty about demand for air travel this year amid a worsening economy, discount carrier AirTran Airways launched a fare sale to all its destinations for flights through the middle of the fall.

Following last week's announcement, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways and Delta Air Lines quickly matched prices on routes where they compete with AirTran. JetBlue said it would do the same.

AirTran's sale extends through the summer, normally a profitable time for airlines past as more people travel. But because of the deepening recession, fewer consumers are taking vacations, businesses are cutting back on corporate travel and many who fly are waiting longer to book.

These factors are causing some carriers to lock in seats as soon as possible, analysts say.

AirTran said its sale fares, starting as low as $39, are available for purchase through March 5 for travel through Nov. 4. The biggest discounts are for travel on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

There are some blackout dates and restrictions involving certain destinations, such as Florida and Cancun, Mexico. A 10-day advance purchase is required and seats at the discounted fares are limited. Restrictions also apply to the other carriers that followed AirTran's lead.
