How to get to Hay on Wye, Wales

THE BEST WAY

From LAX, KLM offers connecting service (change of planes) to Cardiff, Wales, about 47 miles from Hay on Wye. Restricted round-trip airfares start at $734.

WHERE TO STAY

The Swan at Hay, Church Street, Hay on Wye, Herefordshire; 011-44-1497-82-11-88, www.swanathay.co.uk. The 19-room hotel is fully booked for the festival but is usually available other times of the year. Standard doubles start at $198; $250 during the festival.

Llangoed Hall, Llyswen, Brecon, Powys, 011-44-1874-75-45-25, www.llangoedhall.com. About eight miles from Hay is this stately 23-room country inn; some festival authors stay here. Doubles start at $419.

THE FESTIVAL

The 2007 Guardian Hay Festival will be held May 24 to June 3. This year's headliners include Alexander McCall Smith, Bob Geldof, Cate Blanchett, Dave Eggers, Martin Amis, Doris Lessing and Christopher Hitchens. Festival information: 011-44-1497-822-620, www.hayfestival.com/wales.
