Every winter, volunteers from the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum team with members of a local charity to run the Christmas Train from Campo, Calif., to Tecate, Mexico. Instead of being loaded with passengers, the rail cars are chock-full of thousands of gifts for needy children.

"They bring down blankets, pillows, sweaters, necessary things for the kids. It's not just toys," says Sandy Schussler, a volunteer at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo. And very often, the needy "walk miles -- barefoot -- to reach Tecate."

More information is available at the charity's website ( www.christmastrain.org) or by writing to Christmas Train, 1545 Carmel Ave., Chula Vista, CA 91913.
