The sailing finals in the Beijing's Olympic Summer Games will take place at the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Centre starting Saturday. But will there be any cannon fights? We think not.
For the roar of powder and that pirate vibe, head to the Festival of Sail L.A. 2008 in San Pedro.
From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, tall ships will do battle on the not-so-high seas, purportedly "fighting it out for control of L.A. Harbor," according to the festival's website
For $65 for adults and $40 for children 12 and younger, you can view it firsthand aboard ships such as the Lynx, Californian (the state's official tall ship), the Spirit of Dana Point and others.
Here are highlights of the three-day festival:
10 a.m. Friday: The parade of the tall ships, which includes the HMS Bounty (built for the 1962 movie "Mutiny on the Bounty," which will be shown at the Warner Grand Theatre at 478 W. 6th St. in San Pedro at 8 p.m.)
11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday: Visitors can tour the ships.
In addition to "Bounty," here are nautical-themed movies showing at the Warner Grand:
"Master & Commander" (the ship used in that film, the HMS Surprise, will be among the ships on display) at 8 p.m. Saturday.
"SpongeBob Square Pants: The Movie" at 2 p.m. and "Hook" at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Movies cost $5 per person.
The tall ships move on to San Diego from Aug. 20 to 24 and Dana Point, Sept. 6 and 7.
