Some gear's up Fees for sports equipment vary widely among airlines, so travelers should check with their carrier. Here are some sample fees by the busiest carriers at Los Angeles International Airport. Items that have no charge are required to meet packaging and weight requirements, usually no more than 50 pounds.

American Airlines

Bicycle: $100 plus $15 or $25, depending on whether it is the first or second checked item

Golf clubs: $15 or $25 depending on whether the bag is the first or second one checked

Skis: $15 or $25 depending on whether the bag is the first or second one checked Surfboards: $100 plus $15 or $25, depending on whether the bag is the first or second one checked for domestic flights. Up to $300 on international flights, depending on destination.

Delta Air Lines

Bicycle: $175 domestic, $300 international

Golf clubs: No charge

Skis: No charge

Surfboard: $175 a board on domestic flights, $300 for international travel

Southwest Airlines

Bicycle: No charge

Golf clubs: No charge

Skis: No charge

Surfboard: $50 a board

United Airlines

Bicycle: $125

Golf clubs: No charge

Skis: No charge

Surfboards: $125 a board, limited to two (banned on certain smaller aircraft) for domestic flights, and $150 or more a board for international travel
