ARIZONA | GRAND CANYON
Lots going on at Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park, which this week reopened a popular lodge, closed a historic station to install new exhibits and opened its lottery for river-rafting permits.
The rustic 1935 Bright Angel Lodge, designed by park architect Mary Colter and perched just a few feet off the South Rim, reopened Tuesday for overnight stays after four months of much-needed renovation. Rooms have new furniture, bath fixtures and other improvements.www.grandcanyonlodges.com.
Also getting a makeover is the pueblo-style Yavapai Observation Station, which dates back to 1928, houses a bookstore and offers spectacular overlooks. Closed Tuesday, it will reopen May 11 with new artwork, photographs and other exhibits on geologic history. www.nps.gov/grca
If you want to run the rapids of the Colorado on a self-guided trip in 2008, act now. You have until May 28 to submit an application under a new lottery system introduced last year. A total of 213 permits will be awarded for trips of 12 to 25 days.
For more information, visit www.nps.gov/grca, select "River Permits," then "Weighted Lottery." Or call (800) 959-9164 and select Option 3, "noncommercial weighted lottery."
