Scenic Pennsylvania fall drive itineraries

If you're traveling through Pennsylvania this fall, here are some ideas for matching scenic drives with other attractions.

Some 600 elk live in the hills of north-central Pennsylvania. During the fall mating season, you can hear their bugle calls. Pennsylvania created a 127-mile corridor with signs directing visitors to places for viewing elk, other wildlife and scenic overlooks. Foliage here peaks in mid-October.

The route starts at the Penfield exit of I-80 (Exit 111), then goes along Route 153 to Route 255 North. In Weedville, take Route 555 toward Benezette, then take Route 120 South in Driftwood. The drive then loops back south in Renovo, where you take Route 144 South to Snowshoe to get back on I-80. You can get an Elk Scenic Drive Guide through the Pennsylvania Tourism Office at 800-847-4872.

A shorter route, just 14 miles long, is the Laurel Highlands Driving Tour, part of the longer Laurel Highlands Scenic Byway. It starts at Fort Necessity National Battlefield (the fort dates to George Washington) near Farmington on Route 40. Then take Route 381 through Ohiopyle State Park and across the Youghiogheny River. Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater is south of Mill Run on Route 381.

Where am I?

This is a city known for great old architecture. And it's a desert spot and has a long-standing tradition of hospitality.
