Bangs, a prolific journalist and founding partner of the Mountain Travel Sobek adventure travel firm, has lived every adventure traveler's dream since the early 1970s.

He has led first descents of 35 rivers around the world, trekked in deserts and climbed mountains. His latest book recounts not only his experiences, but what has happened to some of these treasured places.
