NEWS, TIPS & ADVICE | PASSPORTS
U.S. passport applications have soared to about 1.5 million a month from a monthly average of about 1 million last year, and the State Department is struggling to keep up with demand.
Why: A requirement that took effect Jan. 23 requires a passport for air travel to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. Applications are expected to increase in 2008 when new rules are extended for land and sea travel.
What to do: The government now recommends travelers apply for passports (new and renewals) at least 12 weeks before a trip. Some travel agencies advise travelers to apply 18 weeks in advance or pay the extra $60 for an expedited service, which the State Department says cuts the wait time to two to three weeks.
