New York City cabs ordered to go hybrid

New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said he has ordered all city taxicabs to be hybrid vehicles by 2012 as part of his efforts to reduce air pollution.

The city's conventionally powered cabs currently get about 14 miles per gallon, Bloomberg said on NBC's "Today" show. Hybrid vehicles, such as 10 recently donated to the city by Yahoo Inc., to promote solutions to global warming, get about 30 mpg, he said.

"There's too much traffic, there's too much stuff in the air and we're not green enough," the mayor said.

The transition to hybrid cabs will happen in stages over five years as older cabs are retired, Bloomberg said. From now on, taxi owners will have to buy hybrid vehicles, which cost less to operate and emit less exhaust, he said.

Where am I?

This is a city known for great old architecture. And it's a desert spot and has a long-standing tradition of hospitality.
