What's new: Opened in February 2007 in a recycled office building a block from the Empire State Building, this boutique-style hotel is budget by N.Y. standards.

It offers free wireless Internet access everywhere, plus free local calls and flat-panel TVs with 150 channels in its 70 rooms. No restaurant per se, but there's a Starbucks off the lobby.

Hotel 373 Fifth Avenue, New York City; (800) 515-8373, www.hotel373.com. Rates from $209 a night.

Where am I?

This is a city known for great old architecture. And it's a desert spot and has a long-standing tradition of hospitality.
