California's Mill Valley Film Festival

The noncompetitive film festival marks its 30th year with a roster of more than 100 films, including Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution" and Tamara Jenkins' "The Savages" on opening night and "The Kite Runner" on closing night. Among the highlights is a showing of the classic "Battleship Potemkin" accompanied by a live orchestra.

When, where: Thursday to Oct. 14 at venues including, in Mill Valley, CinéArts@Sequoia, 25 Throckmorton Ave., and Throckmorton Theater, 142 Throckmorton Ave.; and, in San Rafael, the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center, 1118 4th St.

Cost: Tickets are $12 general admission.
