Maine Lobster Festival: Crate Race contestants sprint across strung-together lobster crates — trying not to topple into the Atlantic — across the harbor in Rockland, Maine, during this annual event. Other highlights: the Sea Goddess coronation, fireworks, marine touch tanks, a carnival, live music and many, many pounds of Maine lobster to eat.

When, where: Aug. 1 to 5 in Harbor Park in Rockland.

Admission: Aug. 1, free; Aug. 2 to 4, $7 and, after 3 p.m., $10; Aug. 5, $7. Children 11 and younger, $2.
