The Sanitarium, 1716 Osos St., San Luis Obispo; (805) 544-4124, www.thesanitariumspa.com. White walls, whitewashed floors, contemporary art all around. Five rooms are in the 1880s main house, and two rooms are in the newer rear house, which is known as the Outpatient Ward. Rooms $190 to $390.

Courtyard by Marriott San Luis Obispo, 1605 Calle Joaquin Road, San Luis Obispo; (800) 321-2211 or (805) 786-4200, www.marriott.com. Due to open in July with 138 rooms. Rooms $169 to $309.

Embassy Suites, 333 Madonna Road, San Luis Obispo; (800) 362-2779 or (805) 549-0800, www.embassysuites.com. About 195 suites, pool and recently expanded fitness center. Rooms $189 to $269.

Where am I?

This is a city known for great old architecture. And it's a desert spot and has a long-standing tradition of hospitality.
