THE BEST WAY TO LUXEMBOURG
From LAX, Air France and Air Tahiti Nui offer nonstop flights to Paris. Delta, Northwest, Lufthansa, British Airways, United, American and KLM offer connecting service (change of planes). Restricted round-trip fares begin at $536. Luxembourg City is two hours from Paris by fast TGV trains.

WHERE TO STAY
Auberge de la Gaichel, 7 Maison, Eischen; 39-01-40, www.aubergegaichel.lu. This endearing old inn in the countryside has 17 rooms and an excellent brasserie; doubles $143 to $188, including breakfast.
Hotel de la Gaichel, 5 Maison, Eischen; 39-01-29, www.lagaichel.lu. This is part of the Relais & Châteaux group, next door to the Auberge. It has 12 rooms with balconies overlooking the garden and golf course; doubles start at $293, including breakfast.
Hostellerie de la Basilique, 7-8 Place du Marche, Echternach; 72-94-83, www.hotel-basilique.lu. A well-kept hotel in the town center, adjacent to the Basilica of St. Willibrord, with a first-floor restaurant; doubles start around $150, including breakfast.
Also, a new hotel, part of the Spanish Sol Meliá chain, www.solmelia.com, is to open in May, in an enviable location next to the Museum of Modern Art; prices not yet set.
WHERE TO EAT
Restaurant de la Gaichel (above) has earned a Michelin star for its rich and stylish French cuisine; the four-course tasting menu costs $98, not including wine. The brasserie at the Auberge next door is more casual, with terrace seating in good weather; two courses for about $60, not including wine.
Rue Beck in Luxembourg City has plentiful restaurants, including Brasserie Cathedrale, 22-37-84, for salads and burgers; single-course lunch or dinner at about $20.
The cafe at MUDAM, 45-37-85-1, is a work of art in itself, with tables under an arbor and imaginative contemporary fare; lunch about $25.
