From LAX, Air New Zealand, British Air, American, United and Virgin Atlantic fly nonstop to London. United flies direct (stop, no change of planes). Continental, Delta and Northwest offer connecting service (change of planes). Restricted round-trip fares begin at $701. Prices in the fall and spring often drop to around $300.

TOUR OPTIONS

Plaza Travel in Encino offered these two tour options, which included almost everything but food and airfare. We chose the Brendan package.

Brendan, (800) 421-8446, www.Brendanvacations.com; for $1,848, we received seven nights' lodging, at two hotels -- the Rydges Kensington Plaza for four nights and the Guoman Tower for three. Transportation between airport and hotels, two tours and trip insurance were included.

Travel Bound, (800) 808-9541, rbs.booktravelbound.com. For $1,766, this outfit offered a similar two-person package, with six nights of lodging, travel insurance, airport transfers and one extra 12-hour tour, to Windsor, Bath and Stonehenge.
