THE BEST WAY

From LAX, Air France, British Airways, Delta, KLM, Lufthansa and Swiss Air offer connecting service (change of plane) to Budapest, Hungary. Restricted round-trip airfares start at $734.

THE PLACES

Look for these kerts, or garden cafes, this summer in Budapest. Hours vary, but most are open in the afternoon and stay open to the wee hours.

Szimpla Kertmozi, 14 Kazinczy utca; 011-36-1-352-4198, www.szimpla.hu. A local favorite where the kert craze took root, in Budapest's old Jewish Quarter. Open year round.

West-Balkan, 46 Futó utca; 011-36-1-473-3651, www.west-balkan.com. The coolest lights in kert-dom, in District VIII behind the Corvin Theater.

Szoda Udvar, 1 József Nádor tér; 011-36-1-461-0007, www.szoda.com. The ever-resilient kert, a spinoff of its hip parent cafe by the same name in the Jewish Quarter. Features orange-themed everything, a good crowd and a fresh vibe.

Sarkkert, Margrit Island, www.sark.hu. A rustic kert on Margrit Island, a green enclave between Buda and Pest that draws a laid-back crowd of kert loyalists.
