Rating: Two stars*

Noteworthy: Developer Edward Kaen turned a historic building into an upscale hotel designed by Pininfarina.

The stay: High style transports you out of San Diego and into Italy.

The scene: Fashion types, well-heeled adventurers and night clubbers mostly keep to themselves in large rooms.

Deal maker: Visually spectacular if you love minimalism, Italy or cars.

Deal breaker: Street noise and no pool, restaurant or room service.

Stats: 432 F St., San Diego; (877) 753-2846, www.thekeating.com.

Rooms: Rates begin at $319

*Rating is based on the room, service and ambience and overall experience with price taken into account in relation to quality.

Five stars: Outstanding on every level.

Four stars: Excellent.

Three stars: Very good.

Two stars: Good.

One star: Poor.

Where am I?
