Ratings: Four stars*

New and noteworthy: Ongoing remodels have updated suites and public areas, added a spa, fitness center and, this month, the Palm Terrace Restaurant.

The stay: Life should always go this smoothly: swift service, available limos and pretty surroundings.

The scene: Busy business types are here by day; it's a party place by night.

Deal maker: Great food at breakfast, lunch, dinner and the bar.

Deal breaker: If you don't like to shop, the neighborhood is dull.

Stats: 690 Newport Center Drive, Newport Beach; (949) 759-0808, www.theislandhotel.com.

Rooms: Rates begin at $385 during the week, and drop to about $275 on weekends.

*Rating is based on the room, service and ambience and overall experience with price taken into account in relation to quality. Five stars: Outstanding on every level. Four stars: Excellent. Three stars: Very good. Two stars: Good. One star: Satisfactory. No Star: Poor.

Where am I?

Should we take offense, order a drink, or what? That depends, of course, on where you think these words turned up.
