LAT Rating: Two stars*

Rooms: Rates begin at $379.

New and noteworthy: Acclaimed interior designer Thomas Shoos has put his high-glam spin on an $18-million remodel, including the 18th-floor Penthouse restaurant.

The stay: Ocean-view, compact rooms are peaceful, stylish havens for boutique hotel habitués and an elevator ride from a hot new lounge and restaurant scene.

The scene: Creative types in late-model European sports cars fill the rooms; enthusiastic local partygoers socialize and scan for dates in the Penthouse.

Deal maker: Location, location, location.

Deal breaker: For all the high style, amenities are low to no: no spa, no pool, no outdoor dining, views from the toilet.

Stats: 1111 2nd St., Santa Monica, CA 90403; (310) 394-5454, www.thehuntleyhotel.com.

*Rating is based on the room, service and ambience, and overall experience with price taken into account in relation to quality.

Five stars: Outstanding on every level.

Four stars: Excellent.

Three stars: Very good.

Two stars: Good.

One Star: Satisfactory.

No star: Poor.

Where am I?

This hotel, which dates to 1921, has 39 rooms and commanding perch by a big river.
