ARIZONA | GRAND CANYON
Visitors can hop on Highway 67 beginning Tuesday, when other services also start operating.
Gearing up for the summer season on its North Rim, Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona plans to reopen the area's access road, Highway 67, next week after its annual winter closure.
Although it has fewer services and places to stay than the year-round South Rim, home to El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge and other inns, the North Rim offers access to several major trails and spectacular views of the canyon from 8,500 feet up. It is about 215 miles from the South Rim.
Highway 67 is scheduled to open at 6 a.m. Tuesday. The same day, the North Rim's Grand Canyon Lodge, visitor center, camper services, gas station and other facilities will start operating. Summer trail rides down North Kaibab Trail will begin too.
The season's first-day ranger program at the North Rim will start at 4 p.m. Wednesday, and the first evening program at 8 p.m. May 18, both at the Grand Canyon Lodge.
Overnight lodging reservations for the North Rim can be made by calling Xanterra Parks & Resorts, (888) 297-2757. To reserve campsites, call (877) 444-6777, or visit www.recreation.gov.
