Smithsonian Folklife Festival at the Mall in D.C.

Smithsonian Folklife Festival: More than 1 million people typically visit this expo, billed as the largest annual cultural event in the U.S. capital. The stories of regional American and international cultures are told through music, song, dance and other performances, crafts and cooking, narratives and more. Among places featured this year are Virginia, Northern Ireland and Southeast Asia's Mekong River.

When, where: June 27 to July 1 and July 4 to 8 at the National Mall.

Admission: Free.
