Frequent flier airline travel tips

Frequent-flier miles are easier than ever to accumulate, but it's getting harder to use them for free plane tickets or upgrades. Veteran fliers offer these tips:

* Join a program that best suits the way you travel.

* Stick with one airline program if at possible.

* Know what other airlines will accept miles from your program.

* Consider getting a credit card that allows you to earn miles based on purchases.

* Keep an eye out for promotions that'll let you earn double or even triple miles for each dollar charged on the card.

* Book an award flight as early as possible.

* If all else fails, call the airline -- even though it might charge you a nominal fee.
