Grape-peeping, anyone?
The New England Inns & Resorts Association is celebrating its 100th anniversary this fall, and member properties are offering some tried-and-true ways to enjoy the season, along with some new experiences for guests -- like grape-peeping and geocaching.
"Grape-peeping" simply means visiting local vineyards while enjoying the colors and flavors of the season. The Stone Hill Inn in Stowe, Vt., has a Water & Wine Tour that includes a lazy canoe trip down the Lamoille River, taking paddlers to the Boyden Valley Winery, for a tour and tasting.
Overnight rates start at $320, including full breakfast, with the canoe-wine tour an additional $80 per couple. For those with a taste for luxury, the Castle Hill Inn & Resort in Newport, R.I., is offering the Sakonnet Vineyards Wine Weekend Oct. 26-28, 2007, including a three-night stay, a wine and food seminar and tasting, breakfast daily, a gourmet dinner, a Newport mansion tour and more, starting at $2,383 per couple.
The Inn at Harbor Hill Marina in Niantic, Conn., is offering a Harbors & Arbors Package, with a two-night stay, breakfast daily, a certificate for a tour and tasting at one of a selection of vineyards along the Connecticut Wine Trail, keepsake wine glasses, a complimentary bottle of wine and other amenities, with prices starting at $425 per night.
For adventurous autumn lovers, there's a Tree for Two package from the Rabbit Hill Inn in Lower Waterford, Vt., that includes passes for a Mountain Top Zipline Adventure, and a Geocaching Package from the Porches Inn in North Adams, Mass., that includes use of a GPS device for the day.
For some classic leaf-peeping, consider the All Aboard Fall Coastal Getaway from Sebasco Harbor Resort in Sebasco Estates, Maine, which includes a trip on the Maine Midcoast Rail Excursion line from Bath to Rockport.
The Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport, Maine, is offering a two-night stay along with a haunted trolley ride, a graveyard walk, late-night dessert and fireside ghost stories, and a brochure about local haunted houses.
