Escape summer in the United States by heading south to New Zealand for a winter journey that includes round-trip air transportation and motor-home rental.

The deal: The 10-day, seven-night special starts at $1,659 per person, double occupancy. Besides international air transportation, participants receive flights between Auckland and Christchurch, South Island, where they have use of a Maui Spirit 2 motor home for eight days.

The itinerary: The self-drive tour gives independent travelers the opportunity to choose their own itinerary. Among the sights on South Island are Queenstown, Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park, Franz Josef and Fox glaciers and tropical rain forests on the island's west coast.

Details: Air surcharges apply for the weekend (Thursdays to Sundays), as do seasonal surcharges. Taxes and fees of about $65 are extra. The $1,659 fee is based on travel during August and September but is subject to availability.

Reservations: Call ATS Tours, (888) 781-5170, www.atstours.com.
